Home Energy MOT
A Home Energy MOT is a free visit from one of our energy advisors to your home, to help you understand your energy use and how to make your home more comfortable and efficient.
In-depth advice tailored to your circumstances
We currently offer Home Energy MOTs within 7 miles of Norwich city centre if you or someone you live with is over 60.
Subject to availability, we may still be able to offer a visit if you are not in this age category – please email energyhelp@ourpower.org.uk with details of what you’d like help with.
Our energy advisors will adapt their approach to your individual needs and interests, but issues covered could include:
- Dealing with damp and mould
- Draughtproofing
- Keeping your home at a comfortable temperature
- How to get the best from your heating system
- Understanding your bill and meter
- Understanding your Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and how you could improve your home’s rating
- Options for solar, a battery and/or a heat pump
- Information about grants and other support.
What happens during the visit
Our energy advisor will arrange to visit at a time convenient to you. Please let them know as soon as possible if you need to cancel or rearrange. The visit will typically last 1-1.5 hours but may be shorter if you just want help with one specific issue.
The energy advisor will show ID when they arrive. With your permission, they will look around your home with you and identify any areas for improvement, such as gaps where heat is escaping. They may be able to install simple fixes such as draughtproofing strips and will advise on any further action needed.
Our energy advisors can help you set up the controls on your heating system to work efficiently for you and can advise whether you might benefit from upgrading your controls. This can be a good way to save money, as it makes it easier to set the heating for the times and rooms where you want it.
If you’re thinking of upgrading your home with insulation, a heat pump, solar panels or a battery, we can advise on what options are likely to be available and suitable for you. Our energy advisors can talk you through the process and discuss grants and finance options. We do not offer financial advice, nor can we recommend specific installers – but we can tell you what accreditation to look for and how to avoid scams.
We can also help you apply for grants or contact your energy supplier if this would be useful.
